16th May 2010
The most important date in the history of Sibu. It is the day of the small by-election. The 3 candidates running for the election are BN's Robert Lau Hui Yew, DAP's Bukit Assek state assemblyman Wong Ho Leng, or independent Narawi Haron. The by-election is a very uptight event throughout the entire process with some scandals occuring. Here are the highlight for the light readers. Enjoy the very first political storm in Sibu, Sarawak.
Firstly, I present to you videos depicting the situation in Sibu.
Here's the speech by our PM the night before the by-election. His 'deal' is very interesting cause it sounded more like a b****. I'm sure the rest of us feels the same too. LOL! He even used the word 'bullshit'. Not exactly a role model for the citizens.
On the very day at approximately 9.20am, it was discovered the Election Committee are not properly trained.
Nearing 11am, trouble brewed around the polling station at SJKC Methodist. The booth set up by PKR is against the law so Sarawak EC chief ordered for its removal. The Penang PKR director claims the booth as a shelter for supporters because the weather look unfavourable. Meanwhile, 5 young BN supporters are complained by DAP and PKR supporters because they were waving BN party flags which is against the electoral law. After the EC officer warns them and leaves, the young turks are back to waving their BN flags again.
Around half past 12, a more extreme incident occured. There was a minor scuffle Regional Development Minister Shafie Apdal chased the team of DAP party workers out of the polling station. I'm too lazy to into the details. DAP has also received many complaints of BN vote-buying near the polling station at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sg. Aup. Here's a testament by DAP MP for Bakri in Johor.
"One of the local resident even showed us a RM70 received from BN half-an-hour ago, and gave us his IC number as proof," Er Teck Hwa told Malaysiakini in a short Email.
After that, there are a lot of incidents as well but too much of a hassle to mention here so everyone interested in the details, please visit malaysiakini.com for more information.
The climax of the day is during the counting of the postal ballots. A lot of conspiracies aroused throughout the evening till late night. DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang questions the hold-up in the Election Commission's announcement of the 2,571 postal ballots. There was also a closed door meeting between the Election Committee members. So suspicious until I 'beh tahan'.
In the end, DAP still win with a majority of 398 votes. A wafer-thin victory, many of the DAP leaders commented happily. Since we've chosen for DAP with their motto 'Sibu 4 Change', hopefully changes will be brought to Sibu to become a prosperous and modern city in years to come (Sibu is still a town actually xD).
Lastly, all the contents in this post do not belong to me so please don't sue me. ^.^
